Going vegan…with your hair products of course!

As someone that’s been “natural” all of my life, I have no relation of the struggles of going natural from formerly chemically processed hair except that of which I’ve heard from my clients when doing their hair. What I do know is that I’ve used a number of “natural hair products” over the years, some of which were great, some of which seemed good until I realized how bad they were for my hair, some that I absolutely love and use religiously now, and others that I’m eyeing to soon purchase and give a go.

Something that I’ve learned along my journey is that being a product junkie is not the move. I know we love to try different things and some things work better than others in our hair for their specific purchase, but also understand that some oof the products that you combine together may have counter reactive ingreidents and cause you some of the problems that you’re experiencing. This will soumd cliche and really won’t be anythigng that you’ve never heard before, but I want to encourage you all to try one line at a time and when you’re transitioning from one product line to another, give your hair a good clarifying shampoo to remove as much product residue as possible.

Below are my top two brands that I’ve tried and love(d):

1. Kriya Botanicals

From the owners, “Kriya Botanicals is a botanically based organic and natural hair and spa care product line. Our products are botanically based containing organic and natural herbs, flowers, roots and barks that provide nutrients to the hair and scalp promoting hydration, moisture and healthy hair growth. Our product line consist of quality shampoos bars, conditioners, moisturizers and styling products.”

This product line offers products for all hair types by helping you to identify your hair’s porosity level and offering you products based on that as well as other products to help you achieve all of the different natural hair styles and goals that you’re reaching for. Below, I’ll provide you with the information on the porosity test and how it’s completed, how to care for each level of porosity, as well as the two major collections from this line.

What’s the low on hair porosity and how to test?

High Porosity Collection ($62):

“The High Porosity Hair Care System cleanses, repairs, moisturizes and seals your hair. This line consists of fruits, honey, yogurt and other natural ingredients that assist in closing your hair’s cuticles and helps to retain moisture. This system prevents split ends, strengthens and repairs dry or damaged hair. Adds luster and leaves your hair feeling soft.”

Includes Full Size:

STEP 1: High Porosity Cleansing Conditioner

STEP 2: High Porosity Deep Treatment Masque

STEP 3: High Porosity Leave In Conditioner

STEP 4: High Porosity Hair Oil

STEP 5: High Porosity Styling Custard

Low Porosity Collection ($57.50):

“The Low Porosity Hair Care System cleanses, repairs, moisturizes and protects your hair. Consists of vegetables, herbs and other light ingredients. This system helps to opening your hair’s cuticles so that these ingredients can penetrate the cortex of your hair. This brings in moisture and hydration, eliminating dry damaged or brittle hair. Leaves your hair feeling soft, shiny and flexible.”

Includes Full Size:

STEP 1: Low Porosity Clarifying Shampoo Bar

STEP 2: Low Porosity Deep Conditioner

STEP 3: Low Porosity Leave In Conditioner

STEP 4: Low Porosity Curl Pudding

STEP 5: Low Porosity Hair Oil

My personal review: (For reference, I have low porosity hair and I use the low porosity line along with the moringa & horsetail shampoo bar and the hydra moist leave-in conditioner) This is the line of hair products that I’m currently using and loving up on. While I must admit that I low-key neglect my hair by throwing it up in a bun most days and suffer from a lot of breakage in my fringe area, these products have been awesome with keeping me together with the moisture that I need while also helping to strengthen my ever so neglected hair. I have become super partial to vegan hair products and while this is not the first brand I’ve tried it has been amazing to transition to and I’ve seen a huge difference in the moisture retention of my hair versus other products that I’ve tried in the past. Something to ad about moisture that may seem just as odd to you all as is was to me is that while a lot of us ladies look for slip when we’re doing our conditioning, the shampoos from this line have thrown me for a loop while giving me added slip within the use of the shampoo. I know that might sound weird, but I promise that I’ve been able to finger detangle my hair partially with just the shampoo in it and it has been amazing with cutting down on week old wash and goes. Another neat thing is that you will find that each product in a collection with have a number on it so there’s no guesswork on the best order to use them in during your styling process. Although I’m cash for switching the last two because I’ve always used the LOC Method (Lotion, Oil, Cream) in the past, I’m slowly becoming more willing to do as my products tell me to do.

2. OrganiGrowHairCo.

From the owner,

Start Here:

OrganiGrow is the very first vegan hair product line and the ones that truly helped me to understand the importance of buying products based upon the porosity of your hair. While I realize I’ve listed the information provided by the owner of KB above I will also present the information presented by OrganiGrow in reference to their own products below:

HAIR POROSITY TEST: Step 1) Wash your hair. Step 2) DO NOT condition your hair. Step 3) DO NOT towel dry, let air dry. Step 4) Put clean strand with NO PRODUCT in it in a room temperature glass of water.Step 5) DO NOT touch the strand, let is sit for 15 minsIf you strand floats it is low porosity. If it immediately sinks or sinks before 15 mins it is high porosity. If it is in the middle it is medium or normal porosity.DO NOT go with the signs go with the test. Results are only accurate if you followed the exact steps.

Growth Bundles:

Much like KB this line is shaped around catering to the porosity of your hair but gives the added bundle for the ladies in the middle that don’t quite have low or high porosity hair but are sitting somewhere in between. I must note that there are different variations of these bundles as in the number of products, but for the sake of the Diamond Bundle that I used, which is the largest bundle, those are the ones I’ll discuss Other bundles include the: Grow Platinum Bundle (L,M,H) and Grow Gold Bundle (L,M,H) . Below I’ll list the bundle types, descriptions, and what’s included:

Other line details: OrganiGrow has a number of products ranging from the growth bundles to the edge control I basically begged the owner to create, beard products, brow growth products, new hair/skin/nails vitamins that I want to desperately try, and skin products that are also on my list of things to scoop up and add to my skin and hair care arsenal. Something I’m also super excited about in regards to this line is the baby products that they’ve come out with that I can’t wait to try out with little Miss Chloe.

My personal review: (For reference I used the Grow Diamond Bundle, Low Porosity) I love this line and the owner! I’ve had the privilege to talk with both owners and they are both such sweet people that genuinely care about the products that they put out to us. During my stint of using these products I noticed such an amazing rate of growth, which I’ll insert here:

* These results are from Jan. 2018 – Aug. 2018

Yes honey, your girl got those inches and some healthy hair to boot. Now as I said before, I’m cash for a bun throughout the day so my hair was getting that same neglect that we discussed before but OrganiGlow clearly didn’t care because it served me the growth as promised. As this being the first vegan product line that I used I noticed the stripping away of other products immediately and the true color of my naturally sandy brown, blonde, and chocolate hair shining through. Something that most people notice when switching from products that coat your hair to ones that penetrate your hair shaft, there’s no longer and build up and your hair begins to seem to lighten up. Overall, this product line was a huge help in my transition to vegan products and I will no doubt return to them periodically and even for specific products like the edge control, probably the beard oil for hubs, etc..

Final Comparison:

The ONLY thing that I would say that makes the difference between these product lines for me was the level of moisture that I felt like I retained with each. OG has delivered the growth to the utmost extent while KB delivered the “slip” in the products when it came to detangling as well as the number of days that I could comfortably go in between wash and goes without my hair becoming super dry. In closing, as I stated, I love both brands and will more than likely hop back and forth between the two but will also continue on this journey of vegan products and seeing what works the best for what and delivers what my hair needs at the time.
